update [Jun. 11th, 2009|05:47 pm]
[Current Mood | quixotic]

February involved editing 6 month old videos, and breaking my car.
March was Frisky (&Mannish), got all local at the Manchester Histories Festival, broke my MP3 player, and worked lots.
April had lots of work, most if it being less than fun. Also took on the organisation of bringing Peterson Toscano to do a show in Manchester, but didn't get to Whitby Goth Weekend.
May started well with Iain from Taurus birthday party, worked on promoting Petersons show, Transfigurations, and had a huge amount of work in the first few weeks until being made redundant. Queer Up North festival started, with great performances from Taylor Mac, Our Lady J and Bourgeous & Maurice, but attendance at some of the shows was very low. Transfigurations sold out though and was a fab success, with help from Kerrykat on the door and me cueing the music, although at one point, we almost had Amy Winehouse instead of atmospheric middle-eastern traditional music. :D The rest of May was mixed. I've been a bit under the weather, and catching up with sleep and having a good rest.

Winnie has been fab, she loves chicken and fish and other snacks like catnip, and likes lots of time on my lap watching telly and snoozing. She's got a bit wobbly in her back legs, but still manages some impressive leaps onto the sofa.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I'm now free from the burden of a working life, and due to the somewhat low number of suitable vacancies, will remain so for a while I think.

T -1 [May. 17th, 2009|08:43 pm]
Final day of employment was Friday. I'm promoting and organising Peterson Toscano's Transfigurations show at Taurus, Manchester on Tuesday (come along, only £5!!), then go through a bunch of paperwork and forms, then the world is my oversized lobster inbetween feeding and looking after WinnieCat

Transfigurations May 19, Manchester. [May. 7th, 2009|02:07 pm]
[Current Mood | hopeful]
[Current Music |disk defrag]

edit: yes I have posted this on LJ before.. doh!

I heard Peterson Toscano on the Trans-Ponder podcast hosted by Mila and Jayna Pavin. Peterson is a 'queer quirky quaker' and an ally for trans people in the gay and christian communities. He was bringing a show to the UK, but not Manchester, and most of the shows were private venues eg University LGBT groups. Instead of having a moan, I contacted him, and booked him at Taurus bar on Canal Street and I'm doing all the promotion and stuff, despite not actually knowing what I'm doing. I am of course worried no one will turn up :/

Tickets are only £5 from Quaytickets - online booking here or 0870 428 0785. There's a booking fee of 95p per booking, not ticket.

Can you please pass the info on to people on your flist/facebook etc who you think might be interested? Or if you know of any groups I can contact, please pass on contact info :)

Thanks
xxx

Trans Bible Characters??? You betcha!

In this one-person play, theatrical performance activist Peterson Toscano unearths transgender Bible characters, those people who do not fit in the gender binary, and who in transgressing and transcending gender, find themselves at the centre of some of the Bible's most important stories. After the interval, Peterson will share excerpts from other plays including Doin' Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House, about his unsuccessful attempt at trying to get 'de-gayed'.

With stories from the road, new material, and always a few surprises, Peterson shares his own story of trying to 'de-gay' himself and the process he took to integrate his sexuality with all parts of his life. Meet Chad and Vlad and nutty Marvin along with Tex and Rev. Meadows and Earthel and other unforgettable character that Peterson has created.

Peterson Toscano is gay US-based theatrical performance activist and comic actor who travels internationally with original one-person shows that address transgender, bisexual, lesbian, gay and queer concerns as well as issues of race, gender, environment and faith. He has been featured in the Times, BBC World Service, the New Statesman, The New York Times, People Magazine, Logo Channel, PBS and the Tyra Banks Show. Peterson Toscano www.petersontoscano.com

Tickets £5 from Quaytickets http://www.quaytickets.com/WhatsOn/EventDetail.aspx?EventId=3109 or 0870 428 0785

helps needed [Feb. 9th, 2009|09:01 pm]
I'm thinking of applying for a part-time (evening) volunteer role in the Heritage Sector. It's a development co-coordinator to research & promote a city LGBT walking trail. They want a CV, but my professional one is completely inappropriate for this, and I'm not sure what they are expecting to see and I don't have the heritage/charity/lgbt/public-sector background to even label things correctly. From a personal interest/pet projects point, it's exactly what I want from a volunteer role.

Here in summary is what they want:

Responsibilities:
- assist with coordination and delivery of the Trail.
- evaluate trails, gaining information from guides, record findings.
- increase awareness of the trail
- work with Website Designer, Marketing, Press & PR Managers in implementing publicity
- review funding opportunities
- develop an educational programme suitable for a variety of target groups.
- develop new projects, including recording of memories through sound and film.

Person Spec is the usual blend of wanting good interpersonal/organisation/communication skills.

Any help will be much appreciated :)

netbook [Jan. 21st, 2009|05:49 pm]
I have a cute little blue netbook bought for not much money (£150 from Asda). I am being very careful on purchases with my forthcoming redundancy, but my somewhat feeble excuse for this is that I can be out and about in the daytime, but still check email, jobhunt and send CVs. It's an Acer Aspire One, 512mb/120gb/Linux, http://www.trustedreviews.com/notebooks/review/2008/08/05/Acer-Aspire-One-Netbook/p1 and runs all the important stuff just fine.

Transgender Day Of Remembrance Video [Dec. 29th, 2008|04:56 pm]
I am at last getting to edit some of the video I've taken over the last 6 months. This is one of the International Transgender Day Of Remembrance events, from 23 November 2008 in Sackville Park, Manchester

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lJWnVvSnYZU <--- If your kit and bandwidth can cope, watch it on the Youtube site rather than embedded, and select 'Watch in HD' at the bottom right of the video as it will give the best quality :)

Gissa Job! [Nov. 24th, 2008|08:27 pm]
[Current Mood | bouncy]

Did the very busy Manchester Christmas Markets on Sunday, nibbled at some German sausage and warm macaroon, whilst [info]kerrykat has paella and macaroon and a gluvine. After that, went to the International Transgender Day of Remembrance in Sackville Park, then after a hot chocolate at Taurus, back home to lounge with Winnie, who's been being a bit sick over numerous carpets.

Got made redundant last Thursday! I finish work at the end of April 09, Best of luck to our Indian and Chinese colleagues who will be taking on the burden of dealing with my and others sociopath managers!

Humbug [Nov. 19th, 2008|04:38 pm]
[Current Mood | thoughtful]

The trees, the dancing dancing trees! For a birthday treat, took [info]kerrykat to see Edward Scissorhands the ballet at the Lowry. Matthew Bourne doing one of my favorite films! It was wonderful and I blubbed more than a little at the end :)

I have a meeting with HR tomorrow where I can bring an employee rep. Using the logic that I haven't screwed up more than usual or made any particularly out of character negative comments about the general competence of people more senior than me, I'm assuming I'm not going to be sacked, but offered a redundancy package. Will update on Thursday night.....

Took the day off to go into Manchester and the post graduate Study Fair, where many (50+) Universities had stalls. It wasn't really productive unless you wanted to hoover up tree-based prospectuses, find out what a vibrant city University of x was based in, or get leaflets about popular PGCE and MBA courses.
Some Unis also should consider their use of the terms 'part-time' and 'distance learning', especially when they are promoting it heavily.

Christmas Giant Buddha-Santa , lights and Christmas lets sell cheap imported tat from Indonesia and China at a high markup, or cook/repackage bargain Aldi/Lidl cheese & sausage at a high markup Market European Market are up and running already and there was even festive jingle-bells singing going around.

Do not buy Green and Blacks Special Edition Spiced Fruit chocolate bar. It will disappear very quickly once opened... Have treated myself to a few food-related bits from the posh shops whilst I still have an income.

Oh, can people please stop using the phrase 'good luck with that'. I'm never sure if it's meant to be a positive comment.

one hundred beeelion dollars [Nov. 16th, 2008|07:51 pm]
[Current Mood | anxious]

Skived off work for a few hours last week and went to a Postgraduate fair at MMU to see what options I have to get back into education after finishing a masters 10 years ago. Looks like my best option might be to do another masters for a year, based around research rather than taught and I'm looking at moving across subjects too. Interesting to see the queues for various faculties, although the MMU promotes itself as qualifications to get jobs, there was a huge huge queue for the Education faculty, so it looks like recent graduates have seen the economic climate and are looking at teaching rather than industry over the next few years.

Trendy Tranny Bags, VBMs, Amazon Social enginerring and Hyperinflation, all after the cut. )

yuk bad news day. [Nov. 3rd, 2008|08:47 pm]
am off work with coughs, sneezes and vomiting, but feeling well enough now to get off the couch without getting the dizzies. My furry shadow Winnie has been moaning a bit about the noise and general disruption to her schedule, but still insists on joining me on the couch for snoozes.

combined with slipping on the top stair at home last week and bumping down all 15 at speed, ending up with quite a few bruises, it's not been a particularly healthy time.

Work is, as predicted, getting quite silly with more backstabbing than Shakespeare. I've got fairly good at my job so very little goes wrong as I plan well, build a good team, and solve things locally rather than lets stuff go horribly wrong, blame others, then act like a drama queen to be seen to fix something at huge cost/time. My lack of recent firefighting seems to have embedded the idea that I'm not actually performing well :/ Am hoping for a voluntary redundancy package to be offered, so I can then move on to a different group of sociopaths by early next year.

Will post some good stuff tomorrow!

Sparkle, the tg weekend...
"I luv you, I really do. I'd marry you, I would, if it were just on personality. You're not like the fit lads"....
"Dolllieeeee Parrrtonnnnnn!!"
you had to be there really....

I can haz iPodz. Almost deleted the email thinking it was spam, but I really have won an iPod Nano after registering on a website. Yay me. Not actually sure if I'll ever use it though, as I have a very good although somewhat larger 20gb player for audio, plus I'm not much of a fan of iTunes. Wonder what the Nano is worth 2nd hand?

Could not think of any reason not to get a purple paring knife

Does anyone else have a bit of a thing for 'Really Useful Boxes'? I picked up a set at Staples, the stationery pron store. 2x0.3l, 2x0.9l, 1x1.5l and a very flat but wide 7l all for £4.99. Trying to think of a use for the 7l - suggested use=scrapbooking.

The memorial stone for Ian Curtis has been stolen :( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/7486280.stm It's especially sad as people used to leave guitar picks, notes and other mementos next to the memorial stone or in a plastic box left by a fan. It gave the place a small sense of community. This is what it looked like

car broken :( [Jun. 23rd, 2008|06:06 pm]
[Current Mood | weird]

Booked in for service next Monday, car fine yesterday but completely dead today and towed to nearest hopefully non dodgy garage for new alternator :/ Other electrical things have been breaking too - a house phone died, and a hair trimmer is dead despite new batteries and working a few days ago. Even my ultra-reliable LedLenser torch is looking unwell.

considers backing away from the PC and video camera and other high value electrical items....
